Garbage Disposals
We offer garbage disposal installation and repair services throughout Columbus. Sometimes garbage disposals stop working and there are many reasons why. Here are some tips for managing your garbage disposal at home…
What To Avoid Putting Down The Disposal
Garbage disposals are a convenient way to get rid of your food waste, but they’re not designed to handle everything you throw in them. Avoid putting the following items down your garbage disposal:
Oil and grease
The blades in your disposal are designed to work best when they are clean and dry. Grease and oil make it difficult for the blades to move freely, so they can’t grind up your food properly. If you pour oil down the drain, it will eventually build up until it clogs the pipes, causing an overflowing sink or even a back-up into your home.
Large bones
Bones can get stuck in your garbage disposal, clogging it up. If you do have large bones to dispose of, try chopping them into smaller pieces first or using a plastic bag to wrap them before disposing of them in your garbage disposal.
Eggshells
Eggshells are made of calcium carbonate—the same substance that makes up chalk and limestone—so they aren’t digested by worms or bacteria living in your garbage disposal. Instead, they’ll just sit there with other scraps until you have an awful time getting them out!
